The current capital of Menorca Mahon (Maó) welcomes sailors with amazing views at the entrance to the port. It offers many monuments and interesting places to visit.
Mahon is a natural port located at the foot of a deep natural bay. Approaching to the city will give us plenty of nice views on the small islands and the fortifications and colourful houses. The city is dominated by the church of Santa Maria from the Baroque period. It is also worth visiting the Carmelite church as well as going to the near Mercat bazaar. A walk through the streets of the city is a must. Many of the buildings are built in the English style recalling the long-time British rule in this city. Apart from the very center it is worth visiting the gin distillery where you can learn a lot about the process of its production.
In Placa d’Espanya you’ll find the fish market (Mercat del Peix) at the top of the steps or with fresh fish until 2pm (Sunday and Monday it’s closed).
